Chalkmark

Privacy policy

Effective date: October 25, 2026

Chalkmark is a lifting log for iPhone. The short version: your log stays on your phone, we have no accounts, we run no ads or analytics, and we do not sell data. There is one optional exception: if you turn on cloud help, the things listed under “Optional cloud help” below are sent to answer your questions. It is off until you turn it on.

What stays on your iPhone

Your log entries, sets, sessions, plans, gyms, machines, notes the coach has learned about you, body weights you enter and chat history are stored on your iPhone. The developer does not receive them. Chalkmark has no accounts and no servers that hold your data. The only time any of it leaves the phone is when cloud help is on and a question needs it (see below).

iCloud sync is not available yet. If we add it, it will be optional and will use your own private iCloud, which we cannot read. This policy will be updated before that happens.

Apple Health

If you allow it, Chalkmark reads body weight, heart rate variability, resting heart rate and sleep from Apple Health to judge how recovered you are. These values are read when needed. Chalkmark never saves them in its own storage, never syncs them and never uses them for advertising or sells them. You can change the permission at any time in the Health settings on your iPhone.

With cloud help off, Health values stay on your iPhone. With cloud help on, a question can send a summary that Chalkmark calculated from them, such as a recovery score or your body-weight trend (which can come from Apple Health body mass). Raw Health samples (sleep, heart rate variability, heart rate, respiratory rate) are never sent. See “Optional cloud help” for the full list.

Progress photos

Progress photos stay on your iPhone. They are never sent to any AI model or any server (other than your own iCloud, if sync is ever turned on). Photos are not included in Chalkmark backup files.

Location

If you allow location while using the app and save a place for a gym, Chalkmark checks once when you open the app which saved gym you are at. This happens only on your phone. There is no background tracking. Gym coordinates are never sent anywhere and you can clear them for any gym.

Voice

When you hold the mic button, your speech is turned into text using Apple's speech recognition. Chalkmark does not store the audio.

The coach

Chalk, the coach, uses Apple's on-device language model on iPhones that support it. With cloud help off, your questions and your data are processed on the phone and nothing is sent over the network. Training numbers such as loads, reps and rest come from a rule-based engine inside the app, not from a language model.

Messages about pain, injury or medical topics are answered on the phone with a fixed reply and are never sent over the network, even with cloud help on.

Optional cloud help

Cloud help lets Chalk use a larger language model than the one on your phone, for chat and for importing history from pasted text. It is off by default. Nothing is sent, not even a connection test, until you turn it on and agree.

What is sent when it is on

What is never sent

Where it goes

Your phone sends the request to the Chalkmark server (a small Cloudflare Worker at server.chalkmark.shadmanrakib.com). The server stores nothing and keeps no logs of message contents. It passes the request to OpenRouter, a service that routes requests to AI model providers. We ask OpenRouter to use only providers that do not keep or train on prompts. The model provider then processes the text to write the answer. The models we currently use are Llama 3.3 70B Instruct for chat and gpt-oss-20b for importing. Everything is encrypted in transit.

OpenRouter has its own privacy policy and terms, and the model providers it routes to have their own terms and policies, which we do not control. We cannot promise how a provider handles text beyond asking OpenRouter to route only to those that do not retain or train on it.

Turning it off

Turn cloud help off in the app's Settings at any time. That stops all sending at once, including a reply in progress. Logging, the training engine and the on-device coach never need cloud help. If the monthly spending limit on our account is reached, cloud help rests until the next month and the on-device coach carries on.

What we do not do

This website

This website is static. It sets no cookies, loads no third-party scripts or fonts and runs no analytics. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs for security and operation.

Backups and deleting your data

Because your data is on your phone, deleting the app deletes it. Backup files and exports you saved to Files or iCloud Drive are your own files; delete them yourself when you no longer want them. Automatic backups kept inside the app are removed when the app is deleted.

Children

Chalkmark is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the effective date above and, for material changes, tell you in the app before they take effect.
